Our religion is fundamentally based on mantras. Mantras possess great power. Each mantra contains the strength of different deities. Any religious activity of Indians involves mantras, and there are thousands of them. We perform daily worship at home and then offer Mantra Pushpanjali. There are specific mantras for defeating enemies, gaining wealth, obtaining offspring, curing diseases, achieving a good life, rainfall, prosperity, and avoiding death. Knowledge of life, Brahma, and the universe can also be gained through mantras.
Rudra, Pavaman, Gayatri Mantra, and all the hymns in the Rigveda are the supreme mantras. Mantras can be masculine, feminine, or neuter. There are also types like Bija Mantras, Mala Mantras, and Mula Mantras. Mantras are categorized by the number of syllables, such as one-syllable, five-syllable, eleven-syllable, twenty-syllable, and twenty-one-syllable mantras. The place where mantras are created and remembered is their heart. These mantras touch the heart, hence they are called heart-touching.
There is an inseparable relationship between Japamala and mantras. Purashcharana rituals are also related to mantras. The Sun is the supreme Brahman. All planets revolve around the Sun, and their revolutions occur through 27 constellations. Each constellation has four parts. My Japamala, representing the revolutions of these constellations, has 108 parts. Therefore, according to religious scriptures, a Japamala has 108 beads.
Mantras always begin with 'Om (ॐ)', while names begin with 'Shree (श्री)'. For example, Om Namah Shivay, Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevay, and names like ShriRam, Shree Gurudev Datta. It is not necessary to sit in one place while chanting names, but mantras should be chanted while sitting in one place.
Maintaining purity and cleanliness is extremely important while chanting mantras. Brahmins who chant mantras must follow many restrictions. Incorrect pronunciation or behavior not in accordance with religious norms brings no happiness to the Brahmin or the host. Improper behavior and impure chanting can generate evil forces, causing distress.
