Some people say that we worship idols, so why do we need a Guru? Even if we worship idols or if that worship is appropriate, we cannot derive any qualities from the idol. At most, we can meditate and contemplate.
However, the reason for having a Guru is that the idol is alive, and through its speech, behavior, and teachings, we can acquire qualities that affect us. By considering the Guru as a form of God, we can experience the special qualities present in them. We can accept those qualities, and to acquire such qualities, we must go to the Guru. Meeting the Guru leaves a unique impression on us. The Guru is not just a person but a divine power. This tradition started from Shiva. Our Guru belongs to that same tradition. If we accept that they are also in the form of Shiva, only then can we give them greatness and accept their qualities. Therefore, while practicing devotion, keep in mind that what my Guru teaches is in accordance with tradition and instructs us to act accordingly. If you keep this kind of intellect and feeling in mind and serve in this way, in my opinion, God will give you everything. One characteristic of God is that He does not give when you want, but when you truly need it. Our understanding is that He does not give when we ask, but gives at the other time. But it is not so. His tradition is that being omniscient, He will give you when you need it. You are worldly people, engaged in worldly affairs and transactions. How can you experience such a great truth? Yet, when He arranges for you to meet your Guru, half of His work is done. The rest you have to do yourself. These are His infinite favors upon us, and He arranges for us to meet the Guru out of His grace. Think about this repeatedly and practice devotion with an unwavering mind. Even if you just bow down, He will give you, but if you think about what you get after bowing down, He will not give anything but take back what was given. So, instead of doing this, serve with utmost love, affection, and purity, and it will bring joy to your life.
