It is not appropriate for ordinary people to observe fasts on specific days. Merely fasting on certain days is not very important. These fasts are not for deities but for planets, which many people do not know. If the fast is broken or interrupted, it does not matter much. However, if the fasts are recommended by a Satpurusha (सत्पुरुष) or a Guru (गुरू), special care should be taken. If a Guru (गुरू) has advised it, it is with a specific purpose in mind to bring about significant progress for the devotee. In such cases, one should not break the fast and should ensure it is not interrupted.
For better results, one should undertake vows. If it is necessary to observe certain fasts as part of family traditions or customs, they should definitely be observed. When a Guru (गुरू) or a Satpurusha (सत्पुरुष) advises a devotee to undertake a vow with a specific purpose in mind, the results are certainly good. On the day of the fast, as decided earlier, one should eat only once in the morning or evening and not consume anything else throughout the day. One should constantly remember the deity for whom the fast is being observed. Monday and Pradosh are such vows. These are not simple fasts. Fasting purifies the body, which is true. Only a healthy person should fast; otherwise, the benefits of fasting are not obtained. Fasting alone will never lead to a direct experience of God. Those who do not understand religion or have not found the right path tend to engage in strict penance. People observe strict fasts with faith, belief, and understanding of tradition. Vows should be observed by everyone (from Brahmins to Shudras). Many people observe the vow of sixteen Mondays. There is also a rule that this vow should be observed by both husband and wife. The results of the vow are obtained only if both have high intentions.
Along with fasting, other rules must be followed. One must observe celibacy and silence. Additionally, one should not leave the place. If one starts wandering around, various external scents and tastes are noticed, which can be a major obstacle in fasting. While observing a vow, one must follow the rules given in the scriptures for rapid progress.
