The primary duty of a disciple is to have Guru darshan, perform Guru puja, and accept the teachings of the Guru with reverence. The greatness of Guru Purnima lies in this. While performing Guru puja, one's mind should attain utmost purity. The mind should be overwhelmed by the atmosphere of Guru puja. The mind is influenced not only by darshan but also by puja. On the day of Guru Purnima, everyone should make a resolution and take care to maintain it continuously. Guru puja is not just a day of worship, but it is important to generate devotion in the heart on that day. Some naive people believe that taking the Guru mantra leads to liberation. Instead of seeking liberation, if one attains the proximity of the Guru (satpurusha), the path to liberation becomes clear. A being like you is unlikely to attain liberation today. But one should strive to serve the Guru as much as possible.
The time is measured from the moment one meets the Sadguru. One needs to determine when the desire for Guru darshan arose, whether one is worthy of service or not, and think about how to serve as much as possible. It is not appropriate to merely say that we are disciples; rather, the Guru should feel that this person is worthy of being a disciple or should feel that there is no harm in giving advice and showing the right path to this person.
Once the form of the Guru enters the life of a disciple, it provides support for many lifetimes. One should not think that in the next human life, one will have to find a Guru again. The same Guru will meet; they have met so far and will continue to meet in the future. Because without the bond of debt between the Guru and the disciple, devotion will not arise in the heart. In the Gita, the Lord told Arjuna that you and I have had many births before; I have killed the Kauravas before and will kill them now. I will only use you as an instrument. Similarly, the relationship between the Guru and the disciple is a bond of many lifetimes. The duty of the disciple is that,
गुरु स्वरूप आपण ओळखावे | पैसे ज्ञानदीप मुखे || यापरते न मागे आणिके || म्हणोनी चरणी लागला ||
In reality, the form of the Guru is extremely pure and pristine. We should have the power to recognize them. However, you people should have the determination to recognize the form of the Guru.
